We Have To Insulate

We Have To Insulate (2018 - 2019)

Warm and cozy, safe and quiet.

In the darkest coldest time of the year in Sweden, we insulated a storefront window (functioning as the gallery 'Konstfönster Joar') with a makeshift insulation made out of 3.31 cubic meters locally produced raw wool. The wall of wool was backlit by the ubiquitous string lights found in every storefront window around that time of the year.

An increasing number of people are attracted by the locally produced. We crave a direct contact with the materials and processes that dress us and give us sustenance. At the same time, xenophobia and nationalism are on the rise all around the world. International treaties and unions are cancelled, while trade tariffs and walls are being built.

Enclosed, excluded. Protect, separate. Silence, silent.

How do we balance the need and urge to indulge in traditions - which anchors us in a place and a culture - with openness towards other traditions and cultures?
